does anyone ever float the gears in their transmission

What do you mean "Float"?
If you mean shift without the clutch, same as any transmission. match input to output speed and ease the shifter lever. If your tower is worn out, it ups the ante some.

My tower is worn to the point that it's prett hard to get it out of second without touching 1st. It's high on my list of things to address. Makes it hard to float the gears. There's really no reason to though, the clutch is fun

Isaac mine is very worn too, I have found that if I give the shifter a light slap forwards it will come out of second go into neutral then I have to move the shifter over to the reverse lock spring without pushing it in then push the shifter forward

Hey Travis,
Floating gears or speed shifting just takes a little bit of practice and patience. It will take you a bit to get the feel of ground speed to engine sound / RPM level but once you figure that out it is super easy.
I drove large trucks for a while and would only use the clutch to start forward motion. Upshift and downshift are easily done by matching your RPMs to ground speed.
