Pintle Hitch
Can someone please take a picture of the pintle hitch and how it's bolted to the frame crossmember? I believe mine is mounted incorrectly or missing a piece.
Also, when the tailgate is down does it hit the hitch?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Pintle Hitch
Hope these help. they are from when I was installing a receiver hitch on my M37. They are the best photos I happened to have of the Pintle hitch

Re: Pintle Hitch
The pintle doesn't get close to the tailgate when lowered.
That is, If you have the correct model.
The pioneer tools can touch it, depending on who made them.
No biggie.

Re: Pintle Hitch
I wish I took a picture but this is from memory. It seems the mount is on the outside of the cross member making the pintle stick out an extra 1/2". Seems like it should be on the inside.
Got to take pictures next time?!!!

Re: Pintle Hitch
Looks like the previous owner assembled it incorrectly.

Re: Pintle Hitch
You're correct, it belongs inside the cross member.
At least the fix is just nuts & bolts, better than something done with a torch & welder...

Ok, thanks for the confirmation. 4 bolts, cotter pin, big nut! I can do that!
With everything found out over the last 4 weeks I will suspect everything on this truck as being installed incorrectly.
Oil pump 180deg out
Distributor, not in sync with crank
BIG, I say BIG, vacuum leak where the wiper tube was not plugged

I think previous owners do all those things to ensure we become very very well acquainted with our trucks!Rdinatal wrote: ↑Thu Nov 09, 2023 9:27 amOk, thanks for the confirmation. 4 bolts, cotter pin, big nut! I can do that!

Re: Pintle Hitch
That is quite common with ex-military vehicles: They are designed to include many differences from civvy trucks, such as electrics, lighting, and bodywork.
What I never understood why so many just ruin the vehicle to turn it into some Frankenstein thing. Cripes, just buy a civvy rig and leave the poor truck alone. Pretty soon, there will be no originals left.

Re: Pintle Hitch
One last item that seems to be missing...
Where do the safety chains attach to? I see a couple of plates but unsure if they are correct.
Is the plate attached to the crossmember or sandwiched at the pintle?

Re: Pintle Hitch
Pictured is a MUTT pintle. Trailer chains to the M37 went to the tow shackles when I was serving in 1977.

Re: Pintle Hitch
Correct. The tow shackles are inside the bumperetts.
