Bob,
Thanks for the response. I've seen you have been following coils in my searches for more info. To add to the discussion the 12ohm Autolite coil currently in the truck requires about a 1/16" spacer under its retaining ears to fit properly in the dizzy housing. The housing is an early one, it uses an external capacitor for RF suppression. I'm not sure if the coil is an oddball or if there was a running change in the housing depth or coil retainer height. Does not effect form or function, other than a small spacer. The 6ohm coil is ord #11663066 and was made by Superior Magneto, it fits correctly. I would not be able to fit anything under the 6ohm coil. If I needed to increase the primary resistance I would have to do it external to the dizzy housing.

Thanks for the Coil history lesson and explanation on the differences.

Jim,
If you can figure out how to get a scope on the system without cutting up the housing, I"m all ears! If I had a spare housing to chop up I could access the coil's leads, but with an intact housing and shielded wires I have no access.

take the big access nut off the distributor housing, it's a big 1" or so hole, right over the coil. you should be able to easily reach the terminals you need from there.
