Re: i need more power
Ray's Site (used to) have the manual along with the kit, but I see he's out of that business. VPW might have a kit by now.
Will the stock tranny mate to the dodge 318 bellhousing ? - Yes to the Mechanical Bellhousing, but there will be some linkage modifications required.
And do I really need a hydraulic clutch ? - Nope, it was my choice and added to the complexity of the conversion.
Does the radiator retain its stock location ? - With a Mechanical Clutch, yes.
Will the stock bellhousing bolt up to a 318 ? - No I don't believe so.

update vpw does have a motor mount kit for 250$
now all I have to do is convince my uncle to help me pull the conversion

Re: i need more power
ya you could ....any sb can be made to fit but I gotta ask what your intention is for the truck. a camed out 318 with a np435a ,d or L52PLOWERWAGON wrote:thanks so any dodge w/a318 and a manual tranny will work? correct?
is doable for a highway cruzer but would never work for rock crawler or plow truck.

I think I convinced him all it took was that I would pay him good to make me a custom wiring harness52PLOWERWAGON wrote:update vpw does have a motor mount kit for 250$![]()

he said um o.k.

Re: i need more power
with the 318 having a piddly 3.31in stroke and the lowest 1st on a np435 being 6.69 to 1 you may find that low is not low enough.52PLOWERWAGON wrote: more of a daily driver than anything

and 1to 1 is still 1to1 and the 5.83s life expectancy after 4000rpm declines sharply

Re: i need more power
I have more than enough Power with my 318 to brake axles. And the Granny 1st NP435 crawls decent.
It all depends on what you want to do and how you plan on using/abusing it.

well that gives me an excuse to build a rock krawller

I will NOT be making mods to the 318 headers and carburetor at the most
Re: i need more power
np420 1st gear = 6.68 np435 1st = 6.69
230 @ 800rpm produces about 130 fpt I couldn't find any numbers for a 318 below 2000rpm

I know a 318 produces way more power than a flathead but does it make it @ the right rpm ?
bouncing the truck and slipping the clutch @ 2000rpm to avoid "flash out" when on a steep hill or stuck in a hole is a great way to snap an axle.
with the t case only having 1.96 to 1 in low im looking forward to crawling around with the 265 @ 400rpm.
im not a v8 guy and will always push for flatty mods.....are you running your flathead with the stock comp ratio of 6.66 to 1 ? .080 off the head will bump that 230 to over 7.5to1 and give you a noticeable improvement for like $80
now a 413 with a np535 or 540 set up with 7to1 1st and od would be cool in a m37...granted I would need that 4.88 14bolt in the back

Re: i need more power
I also read something about a Chrysler slant six I would prefer a 6 but the v8 seems like the easier way to get big HP

Re: i need more power
so whats it take to put a slant 6 in The M37
Re: i need more power
it sure is. for me and how I use my truck a short stroke under square(?) (bigger bore than stroke) v8 is not up to the task and would require a 3 or 4spd atlas with a low of 4to1 to be comparable to the 265 @ 400rpm in low 1.96.52PLOWERWAGON wrote:the v8 seems like the easier way to get big HP
if I was looking at a swap for a m37 I would be looking for a long stroke long rod engine.
chrysler 265 l head 3.438in bore x 4.75in stroke.... 218hp @ 1600rpm
dodge 230L head: 3.25 x 4.63
cadi 500: 4.3 in bore x 4.3 in stroke
olds 455: 4.126 in bore x 4.25 in stroke
chev 454: 4.250 in bore and 4.0 in stroke
dodge 413 high deck : 4.18in bore x 3.75
dodge 318 3.91 x 3.312
I don't want to be screaming at @ 5000rpm drinking back 6mpg doing 70mph in 4th
I would rather cruse in my 6000lb barn door lugging along @ 16~1800rpm doing 65mph in a .73 or .68 fifth

Re: i need more power
I was taught from a very young age that you don't ride or slip the clutch, except to back up to hook up to a piece of equipment that needs a slow finesse. The clutch pedal is either in or out, I brake my axles with raw power and trying things I shouldn't. I do love a slat 6 though!

Re: i need more power
what about an older hemi ?
I think that would be good lookin under my hood
at this point I don't care what I put under my hood as long as its a mopar product and it gets about same mpg as a 230 flatty
