Another Horn Question
Horn honks when I make turns and sometimes wont stop.
I took apart the button and spring,etc in the steering wheel. The only thing in there is the wire sticking out now. I drove it down the driveway and out in the street and it doesn't honk now.
What could be the foul up when the button and items are installed back in the steering wheel? Anyone have any pictures of how far the wire should stick out or installing the set up?

Hi Jay,
Do you have the wire retainer in place? It seats inside the steering shaft with the wire nub seated on top, and must be in place and fully seated. My horn did the same as yours until I reconstructed it and confirmed everything was seated. I also had to shave just a tad off the nub to make it just right = no more issues.
Sorry I don't have a picture, and don't want to pull off the rubber cover-it's a PIA to install!

Sal has the right part, Jay. Yours is definitely jacked up. Take a good clip like the one Sal provided, remove whatever is in the center of your steering shaft, run your horn wire through the slot in the side of the clip, seating the bottom of the wire nub on the top of the clip, then push the clip into the center of the steering shaft, ensuring it goes all the way down until it, too, is seated on the shaft.
DO NOT insert the wire and clip into the shaft w/o the wire nub being fully seated first, as it is hard to move once the clip is inserted into the shaft.
Reassemble the horn then give it a try. Let us know how you do.

Don't forget there is a gland nut on the bottom of the shaft under the steering box. The horn wire comes out there, and can at time wear and go to ground making it honk in error.
It can be a real bear getting it to come apart after years of compression on the rubber seal.

I had the same issue, it's still not working, I disconnected the horn under the hood. I'm betting on the gland nut?

I'm new to this M37 stuff, but I just fixed the horn on the M on Saturday. It all seemed soooo simple
.
Removed the cobbled up parts left inside and put the new bits in.
All going well, hook up a meter to check to see if it works, all works, for a minute. Then fails...
Remove assembly, find wire is pushed into insulator bushing, no contact.
Replace assembly with wire back in place, repeat failure...
Take "spring washer" found on original bits removed and snap on connector to prevent it from passing into the bushing, reassemble.
Works and works and works and works... won't stop working!
After a bit of head scratching some "practice" taking the assembly apart and then putting it back together I finally got it sorted. It seems the tip of the wire on mine was just a hair too long. I trimmed it back to about 1/32" above the crimp and now things are OK.
Hope this helps you out. I didn't take any photos, but now I wish I had. The "spring washer" appears to be 'factory', but was not included in the horn repair kit.

All of that in the last photo is sitting too high-the lip on the metal nub should sit flush against the top of the center insert, then the insert needs to sit flush against the steering wheel nut.
I'll pull mine apart later today and post a photo.

Mine only works when the metal nub is farther out, is that ok? or should I get a new spring and horn button?

Is your contact assembly set up like my top photo (which is why I included it)? If that's correct, you could pry the insert up a little and put an O-ring under it, then re-seat it. Try that and let us know; I don't think you need a new assembly, just some fine-tuning

No , the spring on the inside contact was backwards, I took it apart and made it like yours, I will test asap.
