I have a 1952 M43 that has been running amazing until recently. The fuel lines were starting to plug before the filter under the hood. I would blow them out and then after a couple days later it would happen again.
I opened up the fuel pickup plate and, to my surprise, found an old electric fuel pickup (fuel pump) inside instead of the J-shaped tube. It is caked with all kinds of crud so I have tried getting it out, but it is bigger than the pickup plate hole. Has anyone ever dealt with one of these before? Does anyone know how to get one of these out of the tank?
There is a post on the top of the pickup plate that is for a wire to power the unit, but no wire was hooked up to it. The man that I bought it from bought it from a government auction like 40 years ago and then parked it almost right away; I don't think that the unit came from him. I will try to post a picture tomorrow or so.

I finally got the fuel pump out of the tank. I had to drain the fuel, drop the tank, soak the pump with WD-40 for two days to loosen the rusty screws, and then disassemble the pump inside the tank in order to pull it out. The pump and bottom of the tank are coated with some kind of bluish-gray crud; I don't know if it is intentional, or if it is some kind of oxidation/other reaction that has occurred. Wow, what corrosion! I pulled the tank on my 52 truck this spring to have some leaks soldered and my truck looked nothing like yours. It had some really minor surface rust in a few areas but nothing more. How does the tank feel? Do you think it is usable? If not, look into the tank off an S-10 truck. The GM tank looks almost exactly like the M37 tank. For the effort I spent having it repaired, and epoxy lining it and painting the exterior, I could have bought two or three steel S-10 tanks

I agree with that last statement. It just cost me $350 to cut open my stock tank, have it coated inside and out and have small leak repaired. Add to this about $275 for parts from Midwest ( New pickup w/filter. new sender, rubber gaskets and new fill hoses). Well at least it's still stock and gauge works now and a filter where there was none.
