Not bragging, just sharing....

Post by Milsurp »

The things I've done to my 1954 M37 since buying it in 2005.

The day I bought it and towed it home.

Notice how it had been neglected.

THE BAD
1. It's wouldn't start. (points were shot)
2. Gas tank had a leak.
3. Brakes didn't work.
4. Radiator leaked (as evident in photo)
5. Battery was dead.
6. Entire truck was dirty and neglected inside and out, including the cockpit and engine bay.
7. Steering was extremely stiff.
8. Fan belt was worn out/stretched/frayed.
9. Generator was shot.
10. Coil was shot.
11. Spark plugs looked to be originals. lol
12. I was beginning to feel buyer's remorse BIG TIME!
13. The only thing that looked decent was the canvas top.

The Good
1. Swapped the points for Electronic Ignition
2. Patched up the hole in in the gas tank with JB Weld.
3. Bled the brakes and added fresh brake fluid.
4. Flushed the radiator, fixed the leak with more JB Weld.
5. Bought a new battery.
6. I'm a neat freak and after I was done cleaning it from top to bottom, fore and aft, and port side to starboard side, she actually looked pretty darn good. :D
7. Cleaned out the steering box as best I could and replaced with new quality worm gear lube.
8. Replaced the fan belt, and bought a spare
9. Replaced the generator.
10. Bought a new coil
11. Bought new spark plugs.
12. Drained and replaced all gear fluids.
13. Greased EVERYTHING that moved.
14. Bought canvas covers for my tailgate chains.
15. The guy I bought it from gave me two pioneer racks a few weeks after I bought it.
16. Bolted the better of the two pioneer racks to the tailgate and bought the tools and straps.
17. Installed lock-out hubs.
18. New exhaust.
19. Wipers were very weak, so I replaced the the visible rubber tubing, and they work like a champ now.
20. Added an extension to my gear shift lever. Original length was short and was difficult to reach and shift.. now, with more than 14 inches added, shifting is smoooooth.
21. Replaced the water pump.
22. Painted the entire truck with rattle cans.
23. My spare tire is an original. Rim has "1953" stamped on it.

And here she is now....my daily driver, year 'round :D

Nice job. I don't think anyone would think you were bragging, just proud of your accomplishments. I am sure you enjoyed every minute of work on that truck :)

The first time I did it a few years ago, it took something like 15 cans. This last time, I did it with 12 cans.

WOW! Great job and must be very satisfying to get the old girl up and running as a daily driver.
Thanks for the pic's. Gives the rest of us some inspiration to get back on our projects.
