I was given some new (old stock) batteries and battery acid. These are batteries that are sold dry, no acid, and you add your own acid.
I remember this type in the Army many years ago, way back in the 70’s. Yes I am old (Member of the "Old OD Green Truck Club”).
I remember filling the batteries with acid to the top of the plates and then charging the batteries. The problem with “remembering” is thinking you have it right.
Does anyone remember using this type of batteries?
Thanks,
Paddy

Re: New (old stock) batteries.
Battery and electrolyte should be at least 60 deg F or higher. Fill to just below the bottom ring in the filler port. Let the battery stand for an hour or so and then recheck fluid level. It should be at or just below the bottom ring. Check specific gravity with a battery hydrometer. The cells should all read 1.250 or higher. If any cell reads less then you need to charge the battery. There are a set of very detailed instructions from the battery manufacturer and the Army also published detailed instructions.

Posted this on the G503 and Steel Soldiers site for you also. Here is a scan of the instructions card that came with some NOS batteries I bought a couple years ago. This side is for dry batteries.
