Are these drums different than all the other brakes drums that are turned without a hub? Is the center hole not round, or offcenter? What gives?
They will be fine, they cut like any other drum, I had mine recut (prior to me fitting discs) and they worked a treat, the only thing I had to do was get a cone sleeve turned up so the larger hub diameter was accomodated. The main reason I went to discs was stopping power and parts availability being that I am in a somewhat remote location for M37 parts supplies and my drums were getting to their final cut anyhow.

The drums are lug-centric, not hub-centric. The large hole is not necessarily concentric to the braking surface. To turn them correctly they need to be mounted onto a hub, and the hub chucked into the lathe. A lot of good drums have been ruined turning them without the hub. If you did it and had good results, great, but I think you got lucky.

well today i started by sanding the remaining leaf ad etching them, then i went on painting the part that where preped yesterday, after that i instaled and assembled said parts , i could not get the leaf back on the frame as i picked up the wrong bushing ,ill have to go down and get the rigth one this week end, then i attacked the mangled and bent rear ligth bracket, tha driver side had to be straigtened and a few crak needed fixing but the passenger side was a mess o welding and bubble gum, so out come the grinder and the torch then the welder and a few hour later i have a bracket that looked like new, i love metal work, i find it relaxing!

anyhow enuf blogging, here are the pics of the day, enjoy!

I agree with that sort of Tim but I was curious as to how they were actually done so I contacted my friend Bill and asked how it was gone about, he said that he measures and centres the drums manually and the cone is mererly to lock the drum onto the adjustable hub, the machine spindle is then adjusted to match any run-out from centre. He also said that he has had to trash quite a few drums that were stuffed by "clever" folks (like the ones you speak of) that so "know" how to do these things. Bill knows what he is on about and has cut countless drums and discs over the years so he said to tell you that there was no luck involved, just a good set of measuring calipers, a dial guage, a good machine and a good eye for the job.... Oh - and he says to say G'day to all the folks on here too (he loves my m37) :D

Best Regards - MM :D

M.M.,
OK, I will revise it to "you were lucky to have someone who understood how to do it, rather than the just chuck it in the lathe like a run of the mill drum kind of guy" Sounds like Bill is good at what he does, and knowledgable of the practical theory involved.

Don't worry Tim, I wasn't having a go at you, you just piqued my curiosity so I asked the question of Bill and have gave the answer. Bill is the sort of bloke I gladly get work done with, I would easily trust him with my life as I have known him most of my life and always been amazed as to some of the things he has built and repaired, a skilled man indeed....

This is what I've been using on bare/clean metal;

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp ... RP2050____

After that, used Gilespie Coatings Red Oxide.

wich ever primer is on sale , but i alwars make sure it is self etching primer difference being it does not need an other layer of primer over the etch, i used the dupont stuff and the duplicolor mostly i like it better in areosol so it make less fidling with the gun

well today was a productive day! i got my tire back from the tire shop, they carged me 28 buck a tube! ouf i needed 3,then i got the shackle off the remaining front leaf, i had to fix the stop on the retaining shackle, then i got the driver side front leaf pack appart, it was all crooked ,probably got a good hit on that side in time, got all the leaf cleaned and etched and back togheter with a new center pin, i painted everything i had clean and preped, plus i had the time to start cleaning the bolt for the bumpstop in the front and cleaning the rubber on the bumpstop.

anyhow here are the pics of the day, enjoy!

tires are back from the tire shop!

stop all mangled on the shackle
