Fuel filler pipe assy

Post by ron hardin »

I've removed and disassembled the cargo box and stripping, painting, etc. and I just realized that the fuel pipe is tin or solder coated. Is this to reduce corrosion or reduce possibility of static electricity or what?

I thought they were galvanized to prevent corrosion. If so, the coating would be zinc.

fuel filler pipe

Lifer,
Thats what I thought to, but I had one place I was trying to remove the paint that was really thick and I heated it with a propane torch and the surface melted just like the solder joints I used to make plumbing. I know I didn't get if hot enough to melt zinc which has a melting point about 300 degrees higher than tin.

If you melted it with a propane torch, it must be lead. Oh, well. Not the first time I shot myself in the foot. Still, I wonder why it would be lead coated? Factory coating? Someone's repair job? Covering up radioactive steel? who knows? Not me, obviously! ;)

For sure! Maybe it was one of those rare and extremely collectible nuclear-powered models. :?:

It's depleted uranium so when you run out of ammo you can pull it out and throw it at them!
