Whats the little gear set in the generator for?

Could somebody tell me what the little spur gear set that is inside near the front bearing on the 25 amp generator is for? Thanks,Joe

Anybody? This gear set is really throwing me off. The only thing I can think of is that it may be an oil slinger for the front bearing.?? Joe

Beats the heck out of me! I've never seen a generator with gears on the inside of it. Come on, experts! I'm curious!

Who ever has had they're generator apart will know what I'm talking about. There's a small gear set on the generator shaft and a bigger spur gear that runs off of the small one (one on shaft). This is all right behind the pulley.

There is an oil reservoir in the front cover, the gear slings oil to lube the front bearing. Many have been destroyed because the reservoir ran dry, most folks don't know it's there & never check the oil level. The oil seal fails letting the oil out into the generator housing, soaking the armature, field coils, brushes, & everything else in sight. Can cause some real headaches. The best thing to do is leave this stuff out, replace the front bearing with a sealed & lubed for life bearing. Later generators don't have the reservoir & oil slinger set up, these were equipped as new with sealed bearings on both ends.
