I should have bought several when they were more readily available. Need one for the XM708.

Re: Been over ten years since I last posted
Well, is there still a source for the 5.83 ring and pinion?

Re: Building a new hardtop
Me too, but I've discovered I don't much like getting drenched when It's raining, and speaking from experience, soft tops don't make great roll cages - which is why I built a hardtop all those years ago. Are those sliding Duece rear windows still available? And how stiff was that 18 ga ? Do you reco...

Building a new hardtop
Back around 50 or 60 years ago, I built a hardtop for my 37 by wrapping a softtop frame and bow with 12ga steel, using a sliding back window out of a Duece. It was strong enough to serve as a roll bar without significant damage when I rolled the truck (which I did more than once). But it was so heav...

Been over ten years since I last posted
So I thought I'd check in.
I've got a 53 M37 that my brother gave me in 1962, and a 54 XM708 that I aquired in the late 60s or early 70s.
Both desparately need a total restoration. I think maybe it is about time to bring them back to life and give them to my grandkids.

Me too.
I've got a couple of extra parts 37's. I'm tempted to do this with one of them.

RMS,
Yeah, exactly like that.
Can any of you guys tell me more about it?

Eric, what part of TN?
I'm near Memphis.
I've always thought it would be fun to do a Command Car based on an M37.

Re: engine for towing with m37
I agree about the crappy braking, but a big, high revving engine with stock gearing will get you from 0 to 100 mph a whole lot quicker than the flatty will, and with a lot less gear shifting. Mine tops out at a little over 111 mph. I put a big V8 in mine almost 50 years ago and have never regretted ...

If they are flat headed, then oval head is also a typo.

Re: engine
I agree, with the exception that the big block is just as easy to do. It took me 3 days to pull the 230 and install the 318, and it took me 3 days to pull the 318 and install the big block Chevy. Neither were difficult. Primary installation control points were keeping the winch jackshaft in the stoc...

Re: engine
That's why I only did it once. Scarier than the squirrelly steering was the worry that the flat windshield might blow back in on me. From memory (45 years ago), engine rpm was about 6500. I was running directional 9.00x16 Firestone Super All-Tractions, so it was quite a noisy ride. I slightly disagr...

Re: engine
I live in the deep south and never had trouble with my stock radiator cooling. Top speed is a little over 111 mph (fast enough for me, particularly in an M37). Loud though. Course, the deep south is a far cry from Death Valley or the Salton Sea.
