24v Tachometer Suggestions

Post by ashyers »

I'm thinking about installing a 24v tach. Possibly like:

Anyone have any suggestions? It looks like there's some stuff out there due to marine applications. I'm not opposed to used and functional. Too much shiny new stuff makes the truck look funny.

Andy,

Here's the one I've been thinking about installing. It matches the M-Series gauges perfectly but I just haven't figured out how to mount it in the dash. You'll need to make a harness, but it's just a couple of wires.

wow. I had tried to find a suitable tach for my M 37. Long ago, back in '71, when I was at Ft. Bragg, I had a VW Type 3, the square back mini-wagon, and put in a whole slew of VDO gages, and found a tack perfectly sized tach to fit in the place in my minimal dash where the clock was. Since my flat four had a low rev limit, the 0-4 K tach was just perfect. I put oil temp, ammeter, outside air temp, oil pressure, all VDO gages, and they worked just fine. I think VDO makes really nice gages. I also looked at the army one in the second post, and will soon decide on which one to install. I will just hang the tach on the bottom of the dash in some sort of mount, and not cut a hole in my dash. Right now, I can't recall how I hooked up the RPM pick-up, and I have no idea where to get the RMP pick-up, since I still have the OEM shielded, waterproof wires, and the coil lead is not accessible. Any suggestions on this for me?

If you don't have a defroster, you could mount in that knock out.

I studied the wiring for the VDO 4K rpm tach, and it seems it would be simple to wire into my M 37. It would only require drilling a small hole in the distributor cap, and running the wire from the coil to the tach from there, can put a dab of silicone on the hole to keep any water out. I think I will get around to putting one in a cup on my steering column. Would be nice to see what rpm I was running at in the various gears.

I ran a 12v till I realized I didn't need a tack. I was bad and pulled the meager amps required by a tack off one battery.

do not drill hole in cap

in my cap there is a threaded plug on the top

remove that plug and run the wire through that hole

I believe the hole is there to test the coil with out removing the cap
Thanks,TRAVIS

thanks. I learn more and more every day here on this forum. Will get the tach ordered as soon as I can sneak it by my wife's scrutiny of my credit card charges.

Thanks 52.

I've been wanting a tach. or at least a light that tells me I'm hittin' 47mph. I find that over 40 I can't really tell how fast I'm gettin' and I'm tired of looking down at the speedo. I have little LEDs that can show whatever color you tell 'em. One idea was to mount on in the dash. But now I'm thinking on mounting it on the steering column pointing up and placing a small mirror on the driver's wiper motor to see it. This way its in my line of sight with no wires running all over.

Virtually all electronic tachs are 12-24 volt compatible, some as high as 32 volts. The labeling of 12-volt most often only refers to the light bulb for face illumination, easily changed out to a 24 volt bulb. The gauges are specifically designed pertaining to where they will be receiving an operating signal from, example, AC leg of an alternator, distributor coil, magnet pick-up, generator attached to a mechanical drive on some engines, etc. In the case of the M37, the easiest hook up is from the alternator if you have converted to say a Delco-Remy 10SI unit. A single wire from the AC terminal to the tach and that's it. The next easiest option is the magnetic sensor. Can quickly be installed in the bottom cover on the flywheel housing, adjusted within a few thousandths of an inch of the flywheel ring gear teeth, ground 1 lead to the block, the other hooks to the signal terminal on the tach, hook up a 24 volt source feed from the ignition switch, a ground, and light source wire from the panel light circuit, your done. Works great and takes approx. an hour.

look up small engine tach it has a signal wire you wrap around a plug wire and they are only 10-15 dollars
