Re: farm truck rustoration
engine is seized
I bought a 1997 12 valve cummins 5speed
once I get the cummins paid off I will be reviving this truck with a small block v8
any suggestions on what engine I should put in it
I may be able to get a chevy inline 6 for dirt cheap

Oh how awful! After all that readiness for operating your truck, something has gone terribly wrong! I am about to begin to put my motor back together, and if you can tell us what happened, perhaps I can avoid the same disaster.

Travis,
I'm sorry to hear about your motor. I hope you were able enjoy it a bit before it popped.
Any idea what happened? Maybe it's salvageable? These old lumps seem to survive quite a beating before being scrap so I'll keep my fingers crossed.
Andy

Re: farm truck rustoration
we are thinking that some idiot that had it apart before me never marked the main caps then when he put it back together they were switched around
I put them back where the were when I pulled the engine apart
it may be salvageable but if I have to pull that darned thing again it sure ain't going back in
I will be selling all of my flathead stuff I have acquired
shoot me a pm if you need anything
there were no rods sticking out the side of the block
I'm slightly disappointed that it didn't explode

Re: farm truck rustoration
I feel for you, all that work, to find your motor failing due to mis-marked caps. My machine shop has kept every thing marked, lifters, rods, caps, so at least I shouldn't have to worry about the kind of problem that destroyed your motor. Hope you get something going soon.

Re: farm truck rustoration
Disappointing, certainly.
Would a good line hone (or line bore and hone) correct that problem? Is the crank damaged beyond repair?

Re: farm truck rustoration
New Aftermarket or NOS pistons and rings are not too expensive, and .20 over liners, the two I just bought were made by Cadillac in '71, are only 15 bucks. But your only real choice is to take it to a good machine shop, one that does more than just modern motors, and see what they have to say. Pretty much ever part for these motors is available, other than the blocks themselves. But I check Ebay sometimes, there may be one there. Old blocks are are out there, VPW has whole motors which they say at least are not frozen. I am certainly no expert on these motors.
Good Luck,
