Re: its rebuild time
Hi Travis,
It really depends on "if" and how much the head has been surfaced during a prior rebuild(s). Measure your valve clearance and proceed with caution.

Re: its rebuild time
Travis,
You will need to have the block done (assembled) before you try to get measurements. If you measure it now with worn cam lobes, you will have a false sense of clearance and end up possibly bending something.

Re: its rebuild time
Remove guides by press/punch them down into valve cover area. Then hit them on side to break off lower half of guide before driving remaining piece of guide down bore. You have to break it b/c not enough room for it to drop out without hitting valve spring base.
I made the tool from round stock.

Re: its rebuild time
Guides are very hard/brittle - they break surprisingly easily when hit from the side. As for the install tool - an punch tool with an o.d. near the same size as the valve guide i.d. with a washer that sits against the top of the guide works well to drive out old guides. The guides have a taper on the o.d. - install them the right way/height.
