Be happy this isn't your rearend!
Ok, I know the title was lame, but I couldn't help it! As they say a picture is worth 1000 words. Beware they are gross

- Notice the special differential packing. I believe it's a little known compound called crapoline, sort of prevents rust, sort of lubricates...

- I like the formations in the gunk, reminds me of sand dunes.

- I think we have 3+ hours invested in just cleaning the housing. It looks good now, but it was a truly nasty job!

Yikes, that is nasty!
Re: Be happy this isn't your rearend!
Ditto! Major labor involved to clean that up, as you indicated. Thanks for the photos!

Wow what a mess to clean up. Is the center section [differential] damaged? Also that's a bullet proof shipping container you have there.

Re: Be happy this isn't your rearend!
I don't think the diff. center section is destroyed, but it's certainly little better than a core. The backlash in the ring and pinion was pretty impressive, I'm surprised no teeth were sheared off the pinion. If all goes well we'll have the front axle assembly back together this week complete with some fresh new gears, bearings, seals, brakes,.... Hopefully we'll have the M on it's wheels again soon, though it will be front wheel drive for a bit.
The crate and diff weighed in at 126.5#! It's nice to have a Wood Shop next store to Auto
. Hopefully it does well in shipping, it's making 4 trips.
