M37 & m37cdn distributor shaft

Post by marc8_2 »

Anyone know if 230 distributor shaft is the same as 251. How much longer is the 251?

I have never seen a 230 distributor, but would suggest that Charles Talbert of M Series Rebuild would be able to tell you. He is familiar with both the 230 and the 251CDN engines and their bits.

distributors are the same, but is the 251 oil pump of higher volume than the 230?

Not completely true. The distributor used in the 251 engines common to Canadian M37 trucks use the same basic sealed distributor housing; however the shaft is .250" longer than the shaft used in the 230 engines. Clarification to the myth that they are the same; sure a unit from a 230 will work in a 251, BUT NOT BEFORE YOU CHANGE THE SHAFT TO THE LONGER ONE.

I installed a Chrysler crown 251 large cap dizzy into my 53 230 powered air force m37. is the slot in the oil pump that deep? I didn't notice any dead heading during instillation?

does the 251 oil pump provide more volume?

I can't say what you had without inspecting it. I'm talking the facts concerning mil spec distributors used in both engines.

Higher volume oil pumps are available, once again I can't speak to what one may or may not have.

M37 CDN 24 volt 251 engine military distributors have an off-set tang on the shaft hence the oil pump drive will also have an off-set drive so they will engage correctly. I have 2 M37CDN w/winch 1951 and a 1953 with 251's with the same set
The 251 Crown is a marine version isn't it? A civilian distributor might not have an off-set tang???

All military distributors use the offset drive tang; all civilian distributors have the centered tang.
