door glass seal surround... install?

Post by choppa »

I just bought a set (actually a roll, cut to fit of a rubber extruded profile) of door window to cab weatherstripping.
this would be the seal that is in three (3) pieces per side, one mounted vertically, against the windsheild frame, horizontaly on the top of the roof support, the last peice on the roof support rear, mounted vertically.

I got this set from VPW.. when on the phone he said the design was sort of an "afterthought" by the military designers, and sealing of a rolled up window is "marginal" at best once installed.

I can see how... the door window is trying to "seat" intself into an open channel seal... it wouldnt really seal all that great per design.

thats just my initial thought.

anyway.. this roll of extruded seal arrived... I am trying to determine the correct positioning, or orientation of the profile.

its obviuos what side goes up against the metal mounting surface.. the raw rubber side, where the felt covered rubber side is the glass side.

thats easy.
but the orientation of the outward side is what? I mean the seal in an open "U" profile, with a thinner, tapered wall, on one side, and a sturdy, taller wall . with a round bead profile, opposite it.

first impression is the tapered wall is oriented OUTWARD in the truck so that door window closes against it, and it flexes to allow the door window to pass by it and close up the gap when the door/window is completly closed.

however, this shorter tapered wall is sturdy, with little "give" where the taller wall is more flexible.

I am thinking the taller wall goes toward the outside of the truck so it allows the window to move past it and up against the inside of the tapered wall. that sound right ?

Anyone recently bought a set and instlled like this?

lastly. do I cut this seal to have 45 degree angles where the seals come together?

thanks!
I am "thinking" that its installed with the

I always used the three piece type.
There was a first and second(later) design.
I think your rubber appears to be first design?
Anyway you need to cut the outer part of the "U" away flush with the back so,
the door will open and close with the window up.
The corners are cut at an angle.
A picture of what you have would help.
Hope this helps.
That's the way the "Later" type is.
