Fuel filters

So.. I'm finding fine fine rust getting past my two fuel filters. I thought the filters were supposed to stop this kind of thing. My thinking was; they filter 'till they fill up and clog. Then you get new ones. Does fine powder work its way through them after a time? Is this anther form of being used up for them?

Hi Jim,

Like any other filter, the fuel filter you're using has a minimum filtration size limit (usually in microns). Smaller than that and it's getting thru. I'd be way more concerned as to where the rust is coming from..................and eliminate that source. You don't want a better filter........you want a fuel system that isn't shedding rust!

Has the rust plugged up your carb or have you had any problems? I have one inline glass filter just before my pressure regulator and I can see a few flakes of rust in it. I have been meaning to put another filter back by the electric fuel pump. In addition, my truck is an early one with no filter on the fuel pickup in the tank. I need to put a filter in there also, but the tank is freshly lined and was in pretty good shape rust wise.

what kind of filters are you running? I have had the best luck with eh early style zenith unit that mounts under the hood

Running a couple of these. One before the fuel pump, one after.

probably just some residual rust in the lines somewhere. I bet so small not to worry. I have had the same thing on a few trucks with original lines. I have always had the fuel pump with glass bowl and the zenith filter though so easy to just clean out once and a while. don't have to buy a filter with stock stuff. you can also buy a glass bowl type filter that mounts up at the carb. the fitting needed to mount it is called a Plymouth adapter. The Carter and AC glass bowl filters can be had on ebay every day.

I'm running this same set-up no issues. I just change the filter every time I do an oil change (spring time usually after the truck is taken out of storage).
I agree, must just be residual in the lines!
