Number Plate in Engine Compartment
I am new to this forum as a result of my having purchased a 1953 M37 Dodge. I am trying to determine its hood number but not sure how to go about it. Seem like the vehicle was yellow before being painted OD Green again. There it is a number plate in the engine compartment passenger side fire wall with a number on it. Can someone tell me what the number signifies. I have attached a photo of the plate.

That's the body tag, i.e. the serial number of the cab tub. Not the same as the VIN, which is stamped on the left frame rail, or the USA hood number.
Some of us have been able to determine the original USA number (hood number) by obtaining a copy of the Chrysler build card from their corporate historical collection. The USA number was written by hand on my build card.

Re: Number Plate in Engine Compartment
Hi JH,
Elwood's got it right, Chrysler Historical is the way to go. I got the hood numbers for both my M37s off the copies of the build ticket they provided. Also, the hood number was painted on the tailgate as well as the hood, so check the paint there by lightly sanding thru the coats and see if it's still there.
Another way to get there........or close......is to look in the registry. Take a look at the trucks that are a few serial numbers before yours and a few that were made after yours. If those entries in the register list hood numbers see if they are close and in the proper order. If they are there's a real good chance yours fits in there too. I did that with my Army M and got real close, meaning it could have been only a few numbers due to some trucks not being in the registry. Then when I got my build card from Chrysler that nailed it exactly and it was in fact in the range the registry predicted. So even if the Chrysler build ticket for your truck doesn't have the hood number on it, the registry might get you close enough to where you can make an educated guess.
Hope this helps,
bob
