Jerry can straps

Post by bill monahan »

Ok, new question. Just received new jerry can straps from Midwest but they are of a two piece design. It has two raw ends and included are 10 rivets. Am I supposed to rivet these ends to both sides of the can holder?

Hi Bill,

If I'm understanding you right....then no, they don't get riveted to the can holder.......one end of each strap goes thru a slot and then gets riveted to itself. I'm looking for a pic to show you, but FLIKR is not cooperating right now.

OMG, definetly a pain. Almost impossible to get these rivets together. Tried enlarging the hole a bit on female half and finally got one rivet in. Proceeded to install another rivet and first one fell apart. Goning to get one piece straps.

Actually Bill....I've always wondered how those rivets were installed in canvas. Is there a special tool or do you just put it on a flat surface and pound the crap out of it? I anticipate I'll need to learn this skill in the near future.

thanks,

I would suggest taking the straps to a saddle repair shop and they can do the job and not make it look like bird shxt.

Yeah but then u have to remove jerry can holder, nah. If I can find black pop rivets I'll try that. Otherwise, they're going back. Well at least one, I'll have eat one.

Hi Bill,

I forgot to include who I bought my can straps from. http://www.jatonkam35s.com/Salesmisc.htm

Scroll down toward the bottom of the page and you will see them. I compared the new one to a NOS one and it is almost a perfect match. John Tennis ships fast also, I have bought several items from him for various trucks and the deals are always painless.

Thanks Highway. Looks like a good alternative to Midwest. A lot closer too.
