What motors (if any) will bolt up to the stock tyranny
What motors (if any) will bolt up to the stock tyranny of a 1953 m37 I would love to keep it original but I need more than 50mph for a dd.
May God grant me with the serenity to accept the things I cannot shoot, The ability to shoot the things I can and a place to hide the bodies
You must be a "young" guy.
I just turned 65 yesterday, and I can remember when no truck was capable of 50 mph sustained speed. You could get some of 'em up to about 60 for a short time, but if you didn't like replacing blown up engines, you kept the cruising speed down to 45 or 50. (I didn't. That's how I learned all I know about replacing engines.

If you are going to swap the engine why stay with the old 4 speed. The rear motor mount in the m37 is on the bellhousing so there is nothing but the drive shaft that is reused if you keep the stock trany anyway. There is a lot of late model engines that a 5 speed overdrive trany will fit. Just fab up new motor mounts and you have a rig that will do over 50 and will pass a few more gas stations. I never saw a gas station that a M37 didnt like....Phil in Mt

The only real reason that I can think of for a person to want to keep the stock transmission is to preserve the PTO so that you don't have to change anything up for use of the winch... But: any decent five speed that you would consider sticking in the truck as part of an engine swap would have a PTO port on the driver's side and it's not hard to pick up a PTO (Chelsea or Muncie) for a modern five speed and get things hooked up. Or, convert the LU4 winch to an ASHU4 by bolting on the appropriate Char-Lyn hydrualic motor and run the thing off a power steering pump...

If I understand the question, I think it was for a repower. If we ignore the fact that the engine will still be turning some high RPMs, and simply look at it from a repower point of view...a V8 would be more comfortable turning those higher RPMs right??
What engine could be directly bolted to the existing trans? Would the bellhousing need changed?
I was thinking since it is a typical NP/NVG trans, you could bolt a 318 and bell from a NP435 to it pretty easily???
I'd be interested in knowing this as well...
