Are all Dodge 230 Oil Pans the Same ???

Hi Guys,

A buddy of mine has an oil pan from a '47 Dodge 230 flathead motor he'll let me have cheap. We're talking like a frosty cold 12 pack and a promise not to keep hitting on his sister whenever I see her........but I'm not sure if all 230 pans are the same. I don't have the pan off my truck, but the outside of the pan looks right. Anybody know if the pan on the civilian motor was the same as on our M's??

Hello Bob Not an expert here, However, from what the information I collected over the years the 230 engine was a popular number in civilian cars and trucks made by Plymouth, Chrysler and Dodge . The military took this tried and proven motor and added a few items that would work for them. So, No I really don't know if the pan is the same. Boy, I could of gone on for a while. Did you like the story?

I believe all the light duty trucks have the same pan. there might be variances in the drain plug size. the way they bolt on never changed to my knowledge over the entire life of the 23 inch engines or the 25 inch engines

Various pans were definitely used. Depended on the engine applications, many industrial applications used very different pans from the automotive applications in relation to the sump location. Pans also varied from 1 automotive application to others, mostly in respect to whether the vehicle had a front differential or not, as clearance was a issue in the case of 4x4 applications that would not have been in a car or 2 wheel drive pickup for instance. Then there is the #1 rod cap hitting the pan issue also, that has been discussed here in the past.
