Hi RMS,
I saw that eBay ad yesterday. I don't know what a good set of axles costs, but $500 seems a bit steep....no? Are the stock axles that weak???
thanks,
bob

Re: interesting Ebay finds
There are different factors that determine a shafts strength, the alloy is one of them.
Here is an nice write up:

I searched the Forum for "Foote" and found a couple of people who have broken them, not sure if that means anything or not.
Axle's last longer when you are easy on the gas, if you go offroading with more horsepower and larger tires you would be better served with custom axles.

Re: interesting Ebay finds
People have broken stock M37 axles with big block Chevy & Ford swaps, AND with stock 230 motors...

I saw a guy start his truck one morning at a show and the dew was still on the ground and when he tried to go his tire spun on the wet grass and he broke his axle shaft. So yes they are kind of weak IMHO.
M37s are HMMWV in my world!

K8icu,
I too have heard stories like that. I suspect the axle in that case was cracked from a previous adventure, but didnt quite let go. Then while spinning on wet grass it breaks. Kink of like the guy who picks up a pencil on the floor and his back goes out. It wasnt the pencil that did it, it was picking up the transfer case the day before!

Dr, powerwagontim,
You got me wondering, about my back going out . I laid down on the couch several years ago after Thanksgiving dinner, and when I tried to get up I had severe back pain. I had been chopping ice at work several days earlier, but they didn't think that caused my back pain, hence no worksman comp payment. I didn't think I had eaten enough turkey to cause back pain, but the professionals know every thing. Do you think I can start eating turkey again? In moderation of course.

DJ,
I would prescribe the turkey but in moderation, The real medical value is to accompany it with suitable quantities of fermented beverages. Given the proper dosage, you will feel no pain.

Re: interesting Ebay finds
Charles at Mseriesrebuild said he was having modern alloy replacement axles made up and I will wait for him. I have much more faith in Charles' integrity and knowledge than someone unknown to me. Especially for $500!
Just my two cents worth.

Ah ,the fermented beverages were taken in too much moderation. Thank You Dr. Tim.
Re: interesting Ebay finds
I think Charles was referring to someone he knew who was having axles made, possibly the same person who posted the new Foote rear axles on eBay. I don't think that Charles was having the axles made.
