LU-4 Winch Question

Post by NorthWind »

I'm in the process of rebuilding a LU-4 winch on my M-37. Several parts are missing right now and I intend to fabricate their replacements.
The plate (# BRA-LU4-184A) that determines the spacing of the left and right housings was removed and a hunk of angle iron is in its place. Also the bar (#BRA-LU4-184B) is MIA. This part is rather simple to replace. What I need is the correct spaceing between the left and right housings. Could someboy take a quick measurement on their winch and let me know the dimension between the two?

Thanks,

I measure between 12 and 9/16 and 12 and 5/8 inches between sides. That's using a reproduction top plate and I used threaded rod instead of the correct bar. Personally I think I'd buy the reproduction plate and then you'd have the correct spacing and size. Do you have the rest of the brackets needed for mounting? After it's mounted the plate and bar help hold the whole thing straight while in use so it's really not just the spacing that's important.

Thanks for the dimensions. This will allow me to check what I have and adjust as needed. Have all the other brackets. I found this winch full of some kind of hard grease on one side and some "Red & Tacky" on the other side. All the worm bearings and cups were shot as were all the seals. Only have one more to replace and will be able to reassemble it and place it aside while we work on the front end, which so far was just as neglected as the winch. Thanks again.

Be sure you put correct oil back in it. If you use grease, it will be shot again in short order.

It really amazed me how much effort was expended into pumping all the grease in. Would have been a whole lot easier to put in the correct lube in the first place (and probably faster too). I must have hand dipped for an hour before I had enuff out be I put them in the parts washer. It will be right when we are done.
