Where is the pn located on the transmission. I have a 54 M37 and can't find the tranny pn, any suggestions?
Thanks,

Re: transmission part number
A '54 model should have the early transmission. What do you need for it?Cav Trooper wrote:Where is the pn located on the transmission. I have a 54 M37 and can't find the tranny pn, any suggestions?

Cav,
If you are looking at the tranny, it may be easier to see the date codes on the case/top cover than to scrape off all the dirt and grime to read the case numbers. I was able to find the date code on my top cover fast as it is at the very rear of the cover. If it is an early code, '54 or earlier, you have the early tranny, New Process model 88950, since the early top covers don't interchange with the late cases. My top cover had C88761 just forward of the date code and my case had C88671 on the right side, near the front, next to the PTO cover with the date code just above it.
Hope this helps. I currently am running a late model tranny in my truck until I rebuild my original one. Probably a good idea to inventory what came in your truck if you hadn't already.

Re: transmission part number
If you notice, I didn't bother to include info on date codes, etc. My reason is simple; many times in the military and also in later life, parts get interchanged to the hilt. Seldom will you find #'s that match saying that all components were original to a given unit. All parts interchange on the early series. All parts interchange on the later model 420. The 2 transmissions will also interchange as a complete unit. Most internal parts between early series and the 420 are not interchangable however. Good NP420's are not easy to come by, but the best thing you can do is convert to the 420 if you can locate a good unit; it is a vastly improved transmission over the early series. M37's started getting the NP420 during model year 1958, with the introduction of the B1 trucks.MSeriesRebuild wrote:A '54 model should have the early transmission.
