Heya, y'all!
I'm trying to figure out the door registration number that would be applicable for my truck, an ex USAF XM152.
I know how the registration numbering scheme worked, courtesy of our resident expert, Lifer. So thanx to that info, I know what range of numbers could possibly be on my rig. But, being a super anal detail fiend, I've gotta try to narrow it down.
If anybody knows both the registration number AND manufacturers serial number, it'd be just a hop, skip, and jump to figure out my number.
We know from various sources that there were 5 pilot vehicles, followed by 150 production vehicles. I'm going on faith that Dodge assembled and then serial numbered the 150 trucks consecutively. I assume (and I know where that could get me!) that the Air Force accepted the trucks and then gave them consecutive registration numbers.
I'm jealous of you guys that swipe a door or hood a few times with sandpaper and find the vehicles service registration number or even bumper codes. When North American Aviation Rocketdyne got my truck from the Air Force they did a hellacious job removing the previous owners markings.
Hope you can help, if not, thanx at least for reading this far!

I'll be the first to chime in here, I guess.
First, thanks for awarding me "expert" status re USAF markings. I'm very familiar with them, but I didn't know I was an "expert."
Now, on the ass/u/me thing, it was quite common in the pre-robotic assembly days to see different body styles coming down the assembly line at the same time, so it's not a safe bet that the VINs were actually sequential. It's a logical assumption, but as you said, we all know what "assume" means.
The VIN has absolutely nothing to do with the registration number. These were assigned sequentially as each vehicle was accepted by the Air Force and it's very possible that not all XM152s were accepted on the same day, meaning of course that they may not actually have sequential registration numbers.
I have no idea where you could look, but I'm sure there is/was an Air Force data base listing all registration numbers by year, body type, vehicle model, and VIN. CARNAC, on the Steel Soldiers web site, has access to this sort of information regarding Army vehicles. Maybe he can tell us where to look for Air Force info. I'll ask him.

Hiya, Lifer!
Not only are you an expert, you're a darn nice guy for takin' the time to 'splain to us new guys the how and why.
I know that the serial and registration numbers don't realy tie together any way other than both being sequential numbers, but it's pretty much what I have left to go on.
Odds are that I'll end up having to "pick" a registration number for my truck, just want to do the 99.88% bit.
Thanx again!
