New '52

Post by SierraM37 »

I just picked up a 2nd M this weekend. Has the LU4 w/PTO and Drive Shaft and stock drive train - Man does that 6 cylinder humm like a sewing machine after it warms up. The rest of the truck leaves much to be desired compared to my other '52, but it has potential. I don't think it's an original WW model.

It looks like it was orignally OD, then painted AF Blue. It has a cab, which may not be slavageable, but I don't think it's the stock arctic cab. Has a sliding rear window vs. the oval.

Question on the LU4. The drum turns freely with a slight drag at one point in a revolution. When I engage the winch, should I be able to turn the drum and get the shaft to rotate? I have yet to drain it to see if there's any fluids left but not having played with one before, figured I'd ask.

Sorry I can't answer your question; I'm likely going to have to find a basket case M37 just to get the winch kit (which it appears you may have the same idea....)

Winch

Post by greencom »

Todd,
If you engage the winch you can't turn the drum by hand, the gearing won't let you because you will just push the drum gear against the worm gear on the shaft , it won't turn the worm. The shaft has to turn the drum. You can turn the shaft by hand to get the drum turning if the pto is in neutral. My truch was not a WW either. I bought a running parts truck to get the winch setup although the bumpers are beat up. Good luck with everything.

Drained the LU4

There wasn't much gear oil in the right reservoir and almost nothing in the left - including a few teaspoons of water. I'm going to fill her up with 80/90 so she can sit bated in oil as it will be a while before I get to open it up.
