Cab dolly

Post by refit1701 »

Ok, I am ready to remove the cab from my truck. I have to be able to roll it in and out of the garage to work on it.

I am going to build a dolly out of scrap steel with heavy duty casters...has anyone done this? If so, do you have a picture or a good description of the size?

I need to be able to lay the cab on it's back so I can work on it.

I did it.

3 4x4s ( 1 is cut in half for the ends)
4 casters w/4 mounting screws each
4 long lagbolts

build a rectangle, short end boards are underneath. Put a lag through each corner. Flip it over and mount the casters. Done

Used it on my cab first..now the bed has been sitting on it for years

Darn it ! My dolly is down at the auto body shop. But what ever you do make it expandable and flexible to meet several of your needs down the road. I can shink mine up to do a cab, or strech it out to do a car body.

We got lucky... the Home Depot had a few damaged carts and we asked for one. We put a 3/4" plywood piece on top and the cab sat right on it. The nice thing was the ability to spin and turn the cart and the height off the ground was at waist level. You may want to measure one the next time to get an idea. Plenty sturdy.

My new to me bed is mounted on garden tractor cart, I think David Cial, aka; Hingsing gave me the idea, but four wheels are better than two.
Murf, if your not careful, I might finish before you!!

Two 4x4's and 4 swivel caster wheels. Bolted the 4x4's to the body of the cab by leg bolts through the cab mount holes with the casters bolted to the bottom of the 4x4's/

Thanks for the suggestions! I will probably throw one together out of 4x4's with four casters. I need to be able to lay the tub on it's back for repair. I was going to go with steel but I am trying to expedite this project so wood it will be.

I have a few pictures where you can see the cab on the 4x4's with casters at: http://m37.wawii.com/2005.7.html

Also I could easly lay it on it's back with the 4x4's not protruding out the back.

Cool pics, Will. I do like to see other guy's in-progress pics!

I had a "duh" moment earlier. I was walking about the plant this morning, doing my inspection and passed by some heavy oak pallets we use for shipping. "Duh!"....just take one home, install casters and presto, instant dolly.

:D

As usual, I was over thinking the problem.
