M37 PTO Cable operated

Post by xm708 »

I just brought home an m37 I purchased in ME. I crawled underneath and found a non original pretty much square cable operated PTO. I was wondering if anybody knew where it may have came from ? It looks like a chealsea unit perhaps and yes it has the original tranny in it. The front bumper was cut to a winch bumper and the winch is mounted with no extensions pretty neat but I was hoping somebody may have an idea ? the winch looks almost new for being 50 years old. the truck will be on the registry soon. I was told it was released from the army and went right to the shipyard I bought it from. I can tell you one thing the old saying you can't get there from here is actually true lots of driving for this one.

It is a muncie pto not a chealsea. I found a tag under the grease or rust preservative as we call it here in the north east.

PTO's are made by several well known manufacturers that mate up with these transmissions, what you have here is not unusual at all.

Bruce

It was a little slick at the beginning snow and ice. then on the way home I got all the salt spray from the roads. it is really complete except the top or lack there of. it has some rust in the usual places but for 800 with winch I could not go wrong. started at 0330 and got home at 1930 it was a long day. charles as for the pto I have seen alot of m37's with winches I know it is not a rarity but you usually do not find anything except the original ptos on these .

When you see a PTO like you have, the truck has usually been owned or serviced by someone who has trans/PTO knowledge from the current production market. These folks tend to source parts through vendors they know rather than trying to source original parts vendors. It is typical to see these on M37's that have been owned by municipalites or the like.
