Freeze Plugs

Post by amanco »

Swapping out freeze plugs. Best I can tell the ones on the side of the engine are 1 5/8" Found some at NAPA part # 3811014 79cents each. What do you think?

Freeze plugs from NAPA are fine, just be sure the diameter is correct. More than 1 diameter of freeze plug is used, best to replace all.

Thanks Charles. I went with NAPA because I don't have tome to wait for a set from VPW, got a parade on Nov 9th. The engine had one plug that when I hit it with my wire brush easily exposed a hole in it. So I figured the others were probably bad too. Well, drilling a hole in them to pry out was no easy task. Kinda wish I had only replaced the one that was bad. Made cleaning the water jackets out alot easier :)

You drilled holes in 'em to pry 'em out? We always just used a hammer and a worn-out screwdriver. One whack with the hammer and the screwdriver blade punched right through the plug. Then, we just levered the plug out with the screwdriver that was already in the hole.

Yes, the steel plugs were at least 1/16" thick. Not sheet metal like the cups you get today for modern engines. Only the one was bad, but they are all new now 8) The new NAPA plugs were the same heavy guage metal as the old ones.
