Pinion Drive Shaft Seal

I had a leaking seal on the rear differential on my 1953 M37. I dropped the drive shaft and removed the center seal. Can I just replace this seal? If so does anyone know a NAPA number for the seal. I ordered a few numbers listed on a few sites and none of these were correct. Thanks for the help.

I did both seals with Dave's "rubber" seals and they are dry. If your flanges aren't perfect either pick up some new ones or some speedi sleeves.

I had a slow drip from my rear diff seal, so Charles T sent me his custom "kit" with redi-sleeve, and precise instructions, which I took to a local four wheel specialty shop, where the senior mechanic replaced it for a reasonable cost, and no leaks since. Kit has everything needed.

I had several NOS seals that came with other gasket kits. I pushed the leather seals and felt wipers out of the 'adapters' and put modern seals in. (Ordered by measurement from Martin Fluid Power. $3-4) Not a big deal and not any magical mystery. The only difficult thing is selecting from the 10 different seal profiles and 4 materials.

I only pulled the center seal and the correct replacement seal is Federated auto parts F331227H.

hello guys!
I have a leak in front diff. pinion shaft seal. As far as I can see the joke is in charge of giving president load to the pinion. So my question is: do I have to remove the complete diff housing to replace that seal? or am I confused and the joke can go out with no need of preload cares?

Remove the yoke, then replace the seal. I don't recall the torque specs-someone else please chime in?

Would those torque specs be in TM 9-8031-2 ?

I know next to nothing about differentials, but there are some assembly instructions in that TM, and torques are mentioned for a number of the bolts.

on my previous post I wrote "president" meaning preload...
On the TM it makes you disassemble the whole diff but I'm not sure if the preload to the pinion itself it's done by adjusting the joke nut or if there is another nut there.

If you guys have replaced seal by only removing the joke then it's ok for me heheheh. I will do the same

sleeve mfg/part# in case there is damage to the flange.
