Question for the winch experts

Post by NAM VET »

My LU4 seems to work fine, but there is an annoying leak from the driver's side, where the spring brake band adjustment screw goes into the caae. It leaks about a half teaspoon a day, and messes up my driveway. So the seal between the input shaft and the brake band "compartment" is failed. My question: is is possible to remove the brake band "compartment' and replace the shaft oil seal, install a new brake band, and reseal it? MM sells a gasket/seal kit and the brake band. Having someone completely rebuild my winch, which I don't think is necessary, would be expensive. I just would like to stop that leak. Thanks,,,, Hal

Seal can be done without removing bearing housing. Brake band can be soaked in "Oil Eater" and reused. That stuff is amazing.

OK, found the winch rebuild info in the TM I have. I will try to replace seal without removing the housing, since it appears to be on the distal end of the shaft. thanks. will report back. Hal

The bearing preload is the gasket stack up. Make sure you have an assortment of gaskets in various thicknesses.
