Oil pump replacement/no start

Post by Xloflyr »

Just finished replacing the gasket on the engine oil pump due to a leak. I made sure the slotted area fit and the pump was flush to the block. Now the truck won’t start and it acts like it has a timing issue - previously it would start first crank every time. Any ideas? I’ve replaced an oil pump before without any issues. What am I missing?

nothing from the more knowledgeable members, so I'll give it a shot. Your engine must be so far out of time that it won't fire. If the distributor and pump are off one gear, it will still start but be off the timing marks on the engine front. It has been a year or more since I had my motor apart, but you might set your motor to TDC on #1, there are suggestions via a search to do this, because you can TDC 180 off too. Then reinstall your pump per the instructions on the way to set the gear. There is a link to a video via a search on that too. Charles Talber found I had put my pump in one gear tooth off, and may truck was running way too advance retarded. 'This is assuming you did not adjust or snag a wire on the distributor side of the motor. Keep in touch. HC

Xloflyr,
I suspect you disturbed the dizzy shaft/rotor position when you put the pump back in. Here's what I'd do at this point.
* Put piston #1 at TDC of the compression stroke.
* Note the location of plug wire #1 on the distributor, if you look at the photo attached you'll see the typical position of #1. It's possible yours is pointed to a different tower.
#1 Tower typically next to Yellow Dot

* Pop the cap off the dizzy and check to see that the rotor is pointed to the correct location on the cap (you it located above), if it's not that's likely your issue.
* If things are not aligned properly you'll need to pull the oil pump and adjust as necessary to get the rotor pointed at the correct tower on the cap.
* Once you have this sorted you can static time the engine to get it started. I disconnect the distributor power lead and measure continuity through the points. Adjust the position of the dizzy until the points just open. That will get the timing very close.
* Put things back together and start the engine. Set the timing at idle to 4deg BTDC and you're good to go.

Hope that helps,

Andy
