pto oil change
I've been going thru my m37, it only has 170 miles on it since the rebuild, but that was 7 years ago. I drained the transmission and pto, but it looks like the pto case hangs down past the mating point with the trans. So how do you get the rest of the oil out, don't see any drain plug for the pto. I did a search, but didn't see anything on draining. It's a 51 and Charles Talbert did the rebuild, every time I work on it, I'm amazed at what detail he put into it, great job, Ron

1st question; the only way to get the last bit of oil out of the PTO is to remove it from the trans case & manually dump it out. If you do this, pay close attention to the # of shims that are on the PTO mounting flange. It's very important that you mount it back with the same # & thickness of shims. Send me an e-mail & I'll pass along some tips that will keep it from leaking oil.
Lifer is right, the oil should have been just fine, but there is an up side to draining it. Recommendations for oil has changed since 7 years ago. It's now recommended to use 50 weight oil in the trans & transfer case instead of 90 weight. We use a special 50 weight transmission oil from Synergyn. Straight 50 weight heavy duty engine oil is also permissible. Feel free to call if you would like to discuss it further.

Thanks for clearing that up, I'm not going to take it apart, just wanted to get the old oil out. The truck was sitting in a barn all those years and I know oil does break down and additives go bad, so when I learned about you using 50 weight now, I wanted to change it. It was clean as can be!
Thanks guys, ron
