Leather pitman arm dust boot care?

I am putting on a new leather dust boot and was wondering about initial treatment of the leather. I am leaning towards soaking it in silicone spray waterproofer- like you use on shoes and tents. Anything better?

Bob,
I just allowed the grease to permeate the leather and that seems to work fine for the last 2 years with no signs of deterioration.

Lanolin and or Neatsfoot oil.
