Why can't I get the timing advanced far enough?

Post by M37Jon »

I am trying to get the timing set on my '62 M-37, but can't advance the distributor any further because it is hitting the oil tube. I am still running the 24V waterproof system. I thought maybe someone had installed the oil pump wrong, but I pulled and reinstalled it per the TM without seeing any improvement. Are there any other ways to adjust the timing? Is there anything in the distributor that could be assembled wrong that would explain this? At the moment the best I can get is about 5-8 degrees after TDC.

Thanks,

Jon

The plate on the base of the distributor has 2 slots for adjustment, one on the distributor end, one on the block end. You likely just need to get them in sync to get the adjustment you need.

I tried adjusting it using both slots. At the moment it is not the slot that is limiting movement. The distributor housing is making contact with the hard line that runs up to the oil filter, and that prevents me from rotating it any further in the counter clockwise direction.

From experience you will never get it to 5-8 degrees "AFTER TDC" That is a typo in the manual.

Set it to 4-6 degrees BEFORE TDC and you should be right in the sweet spot.

I had the exact problem three times in a row even though I thought I followed the manual exactly. I purposely installed 1 tooth off and it worked perfectly. Must of been the way I was aligning that it was ending up 1 tooth off.
