Transfer case oil temp.

Post by 06boblee »

I am installing an oil cooler for the transfer case. It will have a pump and radiator. I'm trying to find out what temp I should set to turn on the cooling fan.
Anyone have a guess?

If it were me I'd turn it on at 210F-220F for a starting point. Warm enough to get all the condensation out, cool enough to stay away from killing the seals and lube. You may have to monkey with the settings to get the overshoot sorted out. From what I've seen the "new" case in the truck is running 20 F above the rear diff. and has been warmest at the rear output flange. I have not taken it on an extended 55mph jaunt yet, still breaking it in.

Thermostats we use are set to turn on the pump and cooler fan around 185 degrees, goes off at around 165 degrees. Typically the oil temps runs around 168-172 once the cooling system takes over, everything cycles automatically from that point. In winter temps, the system hardly ever comes on as air flowing under the truck is sufficient to keep it cool, summer temps keep it hoping, especially during on highway driving. Overall, the system has performed great and on an as needed basis.
