Small fire

Post by billy »

I caught my parking brake pad on fire today.
I forgot to release it and drove about 100 feet when the cab filled with smoke
I stopped and looked under there
Sure nuff a little bit of flame.
Used my fire extinguisher for the first time in my life

Except for using the Fire Extinguisher, I've been there and done that, as I'm sure almost if not all of have.
Thanks,

Mine doesn't work like that. If I set the brake, you aren't rolling! Glad it wasn't serious.
(You might want to check the seal and change the oil after heating it up like that.)

I will check for leaks.
I dont have another 50 bucks for new 50w synthetic oil so i hope its ok.
The brake pad was soaked in oil when I bought the truck and I was suprised it worked at all.
It still works too!

If it wasn't oil soaked, it wouldn't have smoked up so fast. Would not have caught fire. And most likely wouldn't have let you drive. You may want to replace the leaking seal. I have found that "Oil Eater" from O'Rielly's Auto works a charm for cleaning the friction material on the band. (and the winch brake.)

I replaced every conceivable seal and installed kwik sleeves when I got the truck.

It could have been really bad.

Did the same thing once on a shaft brake on a ship I used be Captain of up in Alaska. The ship was an old minesweeper converted to the passenger trade, had Cleveland Diesel engines - all stainless and bronze (no ferrous metal for mines).

Anyways, for reasons i forget, the starboard engine was not working so we put the shaft brake on, which is basically a big brake band. Turns out the brake would not stop the shaft from spinning (shaft as like 5 or 6 inches in diameter). It would work sometimes, and as soon as you left the engineering spaces it would spin. Long story short - eventually lots of smoke and alarms, and then trying to put out molten metal dripping into a bilge full of oil....fun times. Sure we sucked some good stuff into my lungs that day..will find out in 20 years or so.

This is a link from a previous post, 12 cyclinder Cleveland on the other ship i was running as well. Wish I had taken more pictures.
