Starter motor removal

Post by EMD567 »

So just how much of my M37 will I have to take off to remove the starter? I have already moved the oil filter out of the way, and the starter motor is loose, but know it looks like I will have to remove the distributor also? Can this be true?

im not up on removing a starter from the 230 but if you find the dizzy in the way, it's one bolt and only goes in one way with its offset tang. canadian 251 starter doesn't require anything to be removed to pull .

According to the TM, you need only turn the distributor to clear.

Well, the starter motor is off the truck. Just for info, you do have to 1) move the oil filter out of the way, 2) REMOVE the oil dipstick tube, and 3)REMOVE the distributor.
I hope that the dodge engineer that designed the starter motor mounts rots in hell, and has to remove and replace all the starter motors on every M37 and M37 variant ever built..................

eh, it's not that bad. swap it another 5 or 6 times and you'll get real fast at it. took me about a year to get the right combo of bellhousing, ring gear, and starter into my 52 powerwagon, after installing a 251 in place of the 230.
