She hasn't wanted to start for a month now and I finally got a chance to work on her. Jay came over and we put in a NOS coil and new plugs and she started before I even got the starter pushed all the way in.
On a side note, what idiot thought it would be a good idea to have the ignition system come out of the block sideways.
Jay, as far as the pertronix issue, we left a part out, that's what caused the problem.

That "idiot" would be Harry T. Woolson, who was in charge of Chrysler's corporate engine design staff in the late 1920s and who originated the diagonal distributor/oil pump drive with the 1929 DeSoto "K" six cylinder. Prior to that engine, the distributor was perched above the cylinder head, with a long drive shaft running vertically down into the block to a spiral gear drive on the camshaft. The diagonal arrangement shortened the distributor drive - which probably reduced timing variations as the longer vertical shaft twisted ever so slightly - and allowed the overall height of the engine package to be reduced.tinmedic wrote: On a side note, what idiot thought it would be a good idea to have the ignition system come out of the block sideways.![]()
The idea worked so well that it was included in the new for 1933 Plymouth / Dodge flathead six (the origin of the T245 engine in the G-741 series) which lasted until the 1970s, and the new for 1930 Dodge "DC" / Chrysler "CD" straight eight flathead, which lasted until 1951 when it was replaced by the first Chrysler hemi-head V8.
All in all, it was a reasonably successful design.

Ordered 2 Optima Red Top batteries and dropped off the battery box, lid and tray to get sand blasted.

I had my battery box lid and tray sand blasted while I was waiting for the grommets and I finally got everything painted and re-installed with my new Optima batteries. The batteries are the perfect size as they lock themselves into the box. I didnt use the tray but put a 1" thick 12-1/2 x 14-1/2 piece of pine under the batteries.

When I brought my truck, I put new batteries in it, but ran it with a center tap 12v electric pump for a couple of years until I installed a 24v pump. My batteries are now six or seven years old, but they don't seem to hold a charge. I'm thinking of going to Optima batteries, like I run in my daily drivers. I am leaning towards the red top, since it is a starting battery, and I don't have any additional draws other than pretty much stock lighting. I know they have yellow top (deep cycle) and a blue top (combo starting and deep cycle). Any recommendations?

I like these batteries. I ran them in my CJ-7 for years and never had a problem and I had an on-board air system, extra lights, radio and cb. My truck is stock except for 2 spotlights so I dont have much of a draw on the batteries.

tinmedic, any chance you could post the model of your batteries? I can't seem to be able to zoom in on your pictures. I like how they are snug in the battery box. There are no side terminals on your red top batteries, are there?
