Seals

Post by dmowrey3@comcast.net »

My truck leaks from both third members and also the transfer case seals , will replacing seals with OEM seals stop the leaks , or is this a problem that I will have to live with ? If there are modern seals available what are the part#s ?

Thanks Dave

you probably don't want NOS seals, seal technology has changed a lot since then. i don't have the new #'s but i'm sure charles does, or you can often find new parts like that from VPW

DC Trucks has the seals, bearings and other parts if you need them. He also has them on Ebay if you look. The pinion seal can be an issue if they are leather. You will want to check if you need to sleeve them to get a good seal. Charles Talbert has posted some good info on both the pinion seal and the transfer case shifter shaft. The Cadillac solution is available from Charles at M Series Rebuild. Shifter shafts out of stainless and an adapter and modern seal for the pinion. Sleeve would still be required there.

As Isaac stated NOS seals are a no-no due to age and materials. Go with a new National or CR. A lot of the kits floating around ePay have Chinese seals with them. Be careful.
Don't forget to speedy-sleeve those yokes as well along with your new seals. A thin coat of Loctite 510 (Permatex anaerobic at NAPA and Advanced) around the seal OD and ID of the speedy sleeves will help seal any "nooks and crannies".
We just got a fresh batch of the transfer case stainless shift shafts in at M-Series that Jess mentioned. Worth the money for a one time fix  .
