gaskets on rear axle importance?

It looks like I lost the gaskets.Think I can use some permatex the right stuff?

The gaskets fill in the irregularities between the two surfaces. They are the thin paper-ish kind. permatex might be squeezed out too much. You can get gasket material at any auto parts store. Use the flange on the left to trace the pattern. For the holes I used a spent 9mm shell casing to punch them out.

FWIW, I have tried both the gaskets and permatex.

I thought that permatex got a much better seal. Hey, I say go for it, you can always change it pretty easily if you need to.

either way will work. if you want the gaskets the part number is 4390 at napa or elsewhere. I think that's a felpro number. less than 2 bucks each

Anaerobic gasket maker works great, we have not used a gasket in years. Materials such as the right stuff are a nightmare to clean off at the next disassembly; anaerobic comes off easily.

I agree with Charles on the use of anaerobic sealer, I use it alot on on the big trucks and the heavy equipment that I maintain here at my shop. The nice things about stuff is that you don't have to be in a rush to assemble, it will sit there just fine for a while ( just keep dirt off it ) , it works great on flanges and housings that have good even clamping pressure, it has some flexibility and it sets up almost immediately and it cleans off easily with a razor blade once dry.
