24V TO 12V ??

Post by richard 775472 »

Hi, I'm new to this site,, and I just bought this 1953 M37, it's in not to bad shape to.
My starter let go last week and there is nobody around here who do this kind of repair, the guy at the shop told me that it was burn off. friend of mind came over with this 12v starter that fits right in place.
Q-1 since we use the starter for a short time ( 2-3 sec )believed that it shouldn't be a problem having that 12v starter in there.
Q-2 beside changing lights bulbs and head light,, what is need to be done to get down from 24v to 12v.

thanks ---------- great site----------

Used 24v starters show up in the buy/sell here and other places (ebay, etc.) with some regularity, and will fit (barely) in a USPS Priority Mail medium size flat rate box. Rebuilt and NOS are also available from places like Vintage Power Wagons; VPW is showing a rebuilt 24v starter for $175 plus your core. Unless you really want to go 12v, seems like it would be easier and cheaper to find a used or rebuilt 24v starter.

The stock starter is an Autolite MCZ4002UT.

My truck had been halfway converted from 24v to 12v (it's going back to a straight 24v), and besides the lights and starter, the flywheel was different and the gauges were different. The search function will find plenty of info here about 12v conversions.

Richard,

Charles posted the following good info in a previous post similar to yours;
The T-245 engines have a different tooth count on the flywheel ring. I have not found anything other than specialty 12-volt starters that are compatible and work without gear clash. Just asking over the counter at NAPA most likely will not come up with anything of good result. The starter drive design is also different, most civilian vehicle starters have a drive that pushes straight into mesh without rotation. The T-245 24-volt starters have a specialty drive that mechanically rotates into mesh with the flywheel ring before electrical contact is made so that the drive begins to spin the flywheel. This design eliminates gear clash.

I bought a 6 volt starter for a civilian power wagon (flat fender) several years back for my M37. It has the right starter drive for my flywheel, and turns the engine over really well. I think I got it brand new from VPW. I was able to retain the use of the floor pedal by bending/welding the lever on the 6 volt starter, which I thought was cool. Those starters with the lever for the foot pedal are for the early FFPW 1946-1950 I think, and they are for the 146 teeth flywheel. I forgot to mention that my M37 is converted to 12 volts.
