Transmissions

Post by 96cummins12v »

Picked up a 79' 318 today to swap into my 62' M37. Originally I wanted to keep the flathead, but due to it's condition and the price the shop wants, it's not in the budget. I'm looking for suggestions on a transmission that will bolt right up to the 318. Has to be 4WD tail and MUST be a manual. Want to steer away from the new NV4500 if possible. I plan on using a divorced np205 and stock axles. I've heard most people kept their axles and they don't seem to mind the 318?

Locally there is a NP445 full setup for $350.

What are you guys running? How is it working? suggestions? tips?

Anything on fabricated motor mounts, tranny mounts, or transfercase, anything to help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the site!

I used a 318, hydraulic clutch and NP435 out of a 1968 W200 for My M37 with the M's stock divorced transfercase. The NP435 in granny low variety is a great transmission to go behind the 318 in the M/PW's, it's size fits well and will allow you to continue to use the divorced transfercase with relative ease.

Very nice build! Is that bellhousing modified at all or is that all stock?

Thanks, the bellhousing is the stock 1968 out of the W200. The hydraulic bellhosing is longer than a mechanical one and can make "packaging" a little tight, by '68 engine has the short snout water pump which helped.

Do you have any pictures of it in the truck. My next and possibly biggest obstacle will be the motor mounts, tranny mounts, and transfer case mounts. I'm 17 and this is my first big project so anyr advice you can offer will be much appreciated. I'm also a machinist so if anything needs to be made up or fabricated I can do that as well.

Thanks

I also see you have stock manifolds on it. How did it fit? It seems like it would be really tight to the frame rail. Did you use the stock radiator?

96cummins12v,

Most of the answers can be seen by looking at my M's WEB Page (http://m37.wawii.com/). Lots of pictures and details.

My radiator is a stock upper and loser, but a new core and I had it moved to the front of the upper tank to give me clearance, again you can see lot of pictures and some info on my WEB pages. After reviewing them just reference which picture you have questions on and ask away.

I don't think its worth the time and energy to swap to a NP205 tcase. its basically the same design and ratio as the stock NP200 which is mounted very nicely in the frame. super tough gear drive.
