rusty (no leaks) gas tank

After I had some pinhole leaks sealed by the local radiator shop, I coated the interior of my tank with Caswell epoxy gas tank liner. It worked well, but if I were to do it again, I'd use two of the epoxy kits instead of one. The kit I used was for a 20 gallon tank, and I did not pour any extra out. If you are going through the effort of lining the tank, make sure you use enough coating. I think one kit cost $97 a couple of years ago, so it is not cheap.

Certain tanks out os S-10 trucks are supposed to be almost drop in replacements, and they can be purchased really cheap compared to good M37 tanks

i am gonna use either muriatic or phosphoric acid for the rust.
i have seen sealers fail before and thats worse than rust.
i will get it clean clean clean then slosh alcohol around in it to remove all traces of water
then splash diesel to coat the innards
then i will just keep the tank topped off with fuel

Hi Billy,

How bad is the tank rusted inside...........surface rust or flaking rust? Muriatic is great stuff, but if you can't see in the tank you run the risk of leaving it in there too long and having it eat right thru what's left of the good metal. Something like Evapo-Rust would work better and not eat thru the good metal if you don't have access to the inside of the tank.....but it is expensive ($20 a gallon). Splashing the tank with diesel won't do much.........the gasoline will wipe the diesel away as soon as it touches it.

You didn't mention why you were going to treat the gas tank.............are you get rust in the carb? Reason I ask is that rust could also be coming from the fuel lines themselves, as opposed to from the tank. Have you checked the lines?

diesel is just to help prevent flash rust before i can fill the tank with gas
ive used the acid before and in five or so minutes it is done.
if not i just do it again
i like to keep the acid in a tightly sealed container for reuse

ive read fill the tank w/ 5 gallons of moist sand and rachet strap the tank to a cement mixer

i am a lot more likely to buy 20 bucks worth of swimming pool acid
than i am to buy a cement mixer
