I’ll give a free pass to Ford. I learned to drive in a 1937 Ford Sedan Delivery. Dad was a carpenter and I learned my mechanical skills working on that truck to keep it running so he could learn a living. The hours I spent driving solo on back roads learning to drive, and some frequent "all-nighters" helping Dad get the truck running so he could go to work the next day are the best memories of my life. And the best part of it all was that it was how I learned the things that I have used to keep many wonderful Chrysler vehicles running since 1956.
I will celebrate my 78th birthday, December 27. I have driven many marques, a lot of which most of you could not identify. And I've been making jest of them for many years. I'll add my remarks to some you do recognize. Here are a few that have not been posted.
The “suits” at Chevrolet wanted to give their truck a more “manly” appearance. The best they could come up with was Pee Wee Herman’s bow tie.
There have been many legal issues about “truth in advertising” so the brass at General Motors have avoided law suits and side stepped the problem by passing around internal memos that admit that GMC stands for “Gotta Mechanic Coming”.
After a while, the ACLU and other groups of non-productive lawyers decided they were going to challenge the word “DODGE” as being too threatening for most people who saw this very strong truck approaching with what could be taken as belligerent attitude. Chrysler Corp. countered that it was in keeping with the requirement for a warning on a cigarette pack. I can only wonder how it will be before someone links “RAM” as being half a word – much like “mother”.
