m37 ran fine but sputtered and quit.
my m has a new motor and has been running great.i went to start it and move it ,when it started it got up to oil pressure then all of the sudden started sputtering like the choke was pulled too far out ,then it died after about 5 seconds and wouldn't start again.it turns over and act like it wants too but doesn't.any ideas out there ,not a mechanic just would like to narrow it down to the probable cause,in other words what woulds be my next step ,thanks jack

Hi Jacks,
Well...........it's either fuel or ignition related. You mentioned the engine was new........is the fuel pump new too? How about the coil? If you're running the stock fuel pump you can check for fuel delivery with the priming handle. The ignition coil can be checked with a voltmeter. You can also check for 24v to the coil while you're at it. Those would be the first things I'd do.

bob

I agree with Bob-confirm good spark at the plugs, then fuel making it to the carb. One of those should provide the needed clues.

well ,I went in this mourning and gave it another try and low and behold it started right up like it never had a problem.mabe a stuck float? I was playing with the choke cable before it ran rough and quit.maybe it stuck open or something.i think I still have to be cautious in the furture .but all your help is much appreciated thank u all so much.jack

Hi jacksauto,
Glad to hear the problem disappeared...........you might want to make sure the engine end of the choke cable is secured tightly and not able to slide in the fitting (not sure what it's called) it's attached to.

Ditto Bob's post-hot tip for all,
I bend the tag end of my choke cable 90 degrees to ensure it doesn't pull through, and ensure I don't yank on the choke knob when using it.
