Strange Tread Wear

Post by w30bob »

Hi Guys,

At the MTA meet last week I picked up a pair of NDTs that I'll use for the spares in the bed of my M's. They're in good shape, meaning no cracking or chunks missing, but one has a tread wear pattern I don't understand. I figure you guys have probably seen this before and can explain it. Check out the pic below......in the middle of the tread every other lug is raised. I would think that if the tire was overinflated the center would be worn the most, and evenly. I don't know what would happen if underinflated. What do you guys think??

thanks,
bob

I have seen that wear pattern before Bob, there is even a name for it, it's called cupping and results from not rotating the tires as soon as it appears, pretty common on NDTs that run full time on the front axle.

Saggy springs can alter caster as well.
