Cleaning up spindle threads on rear end housing

Post by ashyers »

I'm looking for some suggestions to clean up some of the threads on the spindle of the rear end housing. The PO beat up a few of them along with the nuts. No idea what they were doing, but it looks like it involved a large chisel and a hammer!! I have thread files, but no die of that size. Ideas??

If you don't have the right tools to do the job, a hammer and chisel can get the job done, but at the cost of messing something up, as you have so aptly described. The thread files, with a lot of patience will usually get the threads usable again.

Consider using one of these. Mine works quite well for that job.

Failing that, I have a good M37 rear axle housing down here in the Lala land area. If you can work out how to get it there, you can have it.

Thanks for the responses, I have a thread chaser similar to the OTC tool Bob mentioned on the way :). Hopefully it will do the trick and I won't be pulling off any axle housings!

Bob,
Thanks for the tip. I used the new chaser today and it seems to have done the trick!
